Please read the following message from Les Allan, Head of Health and Safety Services:
Dear Students
Over recent weeks there have been a worrying number of small fires in kitchens when cooking food has been left unattended and subsequently ignited due to overheating. On Friday night these circumstances manifested in Yarrow Halls and a serious fire was the result. Fortunately no one was injured on this occasion but there was considerable damage to the building. The occupants of Yarrow Halls were at significant risk during this fire.
I would ask you all to be extra vigilant when cooking food and ensure that you do not leave it unattended at any time. The University will take robust action against anyone who leaves cooking food unattended.
I seek your cooperation to ensure your own safety and that of the other occupants in your residence building.
Thank you, Les Allan

We have been listening to your feedback around the Student Union’s food provision and looking at what services you use and when you use them. From 9th March we have made some exciting changes to what we offer, that will fit in with your needs on campus.
You have told us that you need food to be available in the evenings, so we have increased the hot food available in the Student Union. Our hot food menu is now available until 9pm every evening (including weekends) and includes our new “build your own” noodles and burgers let you build your meal to suit your budget. Libertys is open until Midnight, and offers an alternative no-alcohol space brewing Costa Coffee and pizzas, wraps and other hot snacks later in to the night. A selection of grab and go essentials will also be available in Libertys, including snacks, sweets, juice and basic stationery items.
As a result of the shop being used less between 9pm and 10pm each day, the shop will now close at 9pm. We hope the increased service in Libertys and Geordies will be more beneficial to you.
We have also made some changes to what is on offer throughout the day. Baked potatoes and soup will now be available in Libertys from 10am allowing you to have an early lunch and we have introduced salads pots and new sandwich fillings in Libertys to give you healthier options to choose from.
We hope you will enjoy our changes, and as always we welcome your feedback. If you have any comments, please email your Vice-President on Union.VicePresident@hw.ac.uk.
